What is the food like on an Africa overland tour?

Kindly note that the information provided here is only relevant to overland excursions that exceed 7 days. It is advisable to ask your consultant for guidance as to whether the following is applicable to your specific journey.

Breakfasts: We provide early breakfasts to ensure a timely departure for daily activities. A satisfying yet basic meal is served including tea and coffee, a selection of breads and spreads, cereals, yoghurts, and fresh fruits. If schedules permit, our guides may offer a heartier breakfast consisting of scrambled eggs, porridge, bacon, or beans.

Lunches: Lunch is typically enjoyed at a designated roadside picnic area en-route to the next destination. As time is of the essence, and there is only approximately 45 minutes to serve and eat before resuming travel, the menu comprises sandwiches and salads. These consist of a range of rice, pasta, tuna, and green salads that are quick and easy to prepare, but are still satisfyingly substantial.

Dinner: Our guides take time to prepare a delectable meal focusing on a balanced combination of protein, vegetables, and carbohydrates. We pride ourselves on serving traditional campfire food such as braais (BBQ), potjie (stew), bobotie (curried mince), spaghetti, fish, and chicken dishes that are both nourishing and delightful.

All meals (on both accommodated and camping tours) that are included are prepared at the overland truck. This is a unique adventure where you get to eat under the stars with your new friends and like-minded travellers. Most evenings are spent at camp talking about your experiences. The quality of food in East Africa is comparatively lower than that of Southern Africa due to several reasons. The journey days are more extended in East Africa, allowing for less time to prepare meals. Additionally, food prices in East Africa are significantly higher, and the availability of various food items is also limited.

Small Group Overland Tours: All meals on our small group tours are served in lodges where we stay and will consist of a pre-packed picnic style lunch.

We are able to cater for specific dietary requirements to a degree, however these requests need to be made well in advance of the tour departing. Please confirm with us if you are a vegetarian or if you suffer from any allergies (i.e. nuts, milk, fish). Where possible our guides do try and accommodate clients with intolerances (i.e. gluten, lactose), however we cannot guarantee the availability of specialty foods en-route and we therefore recommend you to bring these items with you or purchase them prior to departing on your tour.
