Malaria Free Safaris in South Africa

Malaria Free Safaris in South Africa

As this month comes to an end, I have two more blogs to write on our South Africa Month, this week I am focusing on Malaria free Safaris. It is a common request and something me and the rest of the team spend a lot of time chatting to clients about.

Kruger is listed as a low risk malaria area, in truth though I have not met anyone over the last 10 years that has contracted Malaria on a Kruger Safari, however there are folks perhaps pregnant or otherwise that do not want to risk it or want to take the medication.

So where in South Africa to go for a malaria free Safari?

The 2 most accessible places are Pilanesberg National Park and Addo Elephant Park, there are other areas, but we think these two hot spots work best in an overall South Africa package.

Safaris in Pilanesberg National Park.

Pilanesberg is a fantastic National park to do a malaria free safari, it is a big 5 National Park that promises great sightings. In fact, our guides report good sightings all year round. Importantly it is only 2 hours from Johannesburg. If you are on a tight time frame or you have children or are plainly not up for a long drive to the Kruger this is the place to go.

Our packages range from the 1 Day Pilanesberg Day Tour to 3 Day Budget and Luxury packages. The day trips work well when on limited time in Johannesburg, you will get a proper big 5 National Park experience in short amount of time. If you are on a budget but want an overnight experience - our 2 Day Pilanesberg Tented camp is very popular. For those wanting their comforts the 2-day and 3-Day luxury lodge package promise a classic safari with all the trimmings.

Nearby to Pilanesberg is Sun City which can be worked into your Itinerary, either for a brief visit or for families that want to do a safari and take kids to the Valley of the waves for the afternoon. This is always a summer treat and a great way to finish off the safari when its hot.

After your Pilanesberg Safari, if you have more time, pop onto a budget flight to Cape Town which is also Malaria free and if you have more time check out the Garden Route and Addo as explained below.

Safaris in Addo Elephant Park and the Garden Route.

By name it is called Addo Elephant park, but I must point out it is not just Elephants, it is a big 5 National Park where you can do a traditional safari.

We like Addo as it fits into our Garden Route combination packages.

For clients that already have flights to Cape Town and do not want to fly up to Johannesburg, - this is the way to go. Arrive in Cape Town, take in the city for a few days then do a 5-Day or 6-day Garden Route tour, you will find a safari in Addo will be incorporated in this package. The tour will focus on so much more than just the safari element, the Garden Route is famous for its beautiful coast, rivers, mountains and forests as well as a whole heap of activities.  Expect hiking, canoeing, swimming, scenic views and the cherry on the top will be the big 5 safari in Addo….. All of it Malaria Free.

In this regard the packages to look at would be the 5 and 6 Day garden Route tours pointed in the links below. We generally have departures running every week, they are small groups tours that run with a maximum of 12 which make them quite personal. We have a range of accommodation options from budget to comfortable guesthouse which you can discuss with our consultants.

What I like to point out about our Garden Route tours is that they are easy going tours, short distances between most points of interest with plenty of time to explore and stretch your legs.
